Diagnostics

Bacteriology, molecular biology, serology, pathology – our services for you

From anal swab, organs and serum to the zygomatic bone – we search for the pathogen in every (suitable) sample.

Bacteriology

In the bacteriology department, we detect easily culturable pathogens up to Mycoplasma sp. in complex culture methods. The isolates are identified with Maldi-TOF mass spectrometry and their antibiotic resistance is determined with microbouillon dilution assays. With specialized PCRs, we detect the pathogen’s virulence factors. As a matter of fact, we are able to forward your isolates to your manufacturer of autogenous vaccines.

Molecular biology

In our molecular biology department, we can detect even already dead or no longer culturable pathogens with our different PCR methods. We offer you the complete spectrum of examinations for bacteria and viruses with modern real-time technique. Additionally, we can type bacterial and viral pathogens via different PCRs and sequencing.

Serology

Our staff in the department of serology is responsible for the indirect detection of pathogens. The health status of your livestock as well as past infections can be evaluated by the detection of antibodies. In addition to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), we offer hem-agglutination tests (HAI) for the typing of influenza virus and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for the diagnosis of leptospirosis. Samples that arrive before 12 o’clock in the laboratory can be examined on the same day.

Pathology

We offer you in our small but refined pathology the targeted extraction of samples for bacteriological, molecular biological and histological examinations. Carcasses greater than about 10 kg are dissected in the pathology of the faculty of veterinary medicine right on the other side of our street. We then get the organs back for your desired examinations.

Our location

Our location in the Biocity is in the immediate neighbourhood of other scientific institutes and companies – like:

  • the faculty of veterinary medicine of the University of Leipzig
  • the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI
  • manufacturers of diagnostic kits for veterinary medicine

Quality management and accreditation

Procedures and execution of examinations are documented in detail. Naturally, control samples need to be examined and evaluated and regularly, the laboratory needs to participate in proficiency testing / interlaboratory comparisons.
As part of the accreditation procedure, they [the laboratory] can confirm to an independent accreditation body [the DAkkS] that they carry out their activities with technical competence, in compliance with statutory and standards-based requirements and at an internationally comparative standard. The accreditation body assesses and monitors the management system and the competence of the [laboratory’s] assigned personnel.
